Trikone Khush Khabar June 2009 Whats New
Pride festivities this summer

The heat is on! I hope all of you desi hotties are enjoying this glorious weather in the bay area. And if you're not in the bay area, well, you need to make plans to visit. Trikonees have proved it time and again that we can be great hosts. I hope all of you had a good time during the Pride month of June. With all the celebrations and parties, though, we must not forget the core reasons we celebrate Pride. The struggle for equal rights powers on with more and more people joining us. Trikone is extremely proud of the brave people who marched in the pride parades in Bengaluru, Bhubaneshwar, Chennai and New Delhi. I am sure it took a lot of courage to publicly proclaim support towards LGBTQ rights and that too with full on media attention. But, kudos to them, they did it and in such an awesome way! Trikone stands in solidarity with these brave people.

Trikone magazine has allied with New American Media to bring public attention to immigration reform. See the Trikoneeditorial page

All eyes are now on the Indian Supreme Court's verdict in relation to the repeal of IPC Sec. 377 due on July 2. We send best wishes and hope this is the beginning of making progress in India.

Looking back

Pride month in the bay area was quite happening, specially with all the events at Trikone. We kickstarted the festivities with the San Jose pre pride potluck and dance party hosted by Hrishi. Trikone marched in the San Jose pride parade and had a booth at the fair.

Trikone co-sponsored the Queer Women of Color Media Arts Project (QWOCMAP) film festival which showcased "Mr. & Mrs. Singh" a short film made by Women of Trikone liaison, Punam S. That film was also part of the screening at Frameline film festival along with Shamim Sarif's "I can't think straight", which was also co-presented by Trikone.

We began SF Pride weekend on Friday, June 26th with a bang. The Pride Jalwa dance party at Bollyhood Cafe was a lot of fun. The following day, the Women of Trikone got together in large numbers for brunch before heading out to the dyke march. Then, later that night, DJ SSHaaN spun some thumping Bollywood music from the Global Village Stage at the Pink Saturday party in Castro. This first time ever event had a crowd of thousands dancing to rocking Bollywood beats. Trikone thanks Josh Smith, The Sisters and co-sponsors, Club Papi and Bibi. Finally, on Sunday morning, Trikonees with their friends and allies paraded down Market Street, with a colorful, fabulous float in keeping with the theme of a desi same sex marriage.

In other news, community member, Rattan Dodeja hosted a fundraiser dinner for a few invited guests to raise funds for Trikone. If any of you are interested in hosting fundraiser events, please get in touch with Poonam at poonam@trikone.org.

Looking forward
