Prop 8 will take away our rights: Trikone urges Desis to vote NO on 8 on November 4, 2008
Trikone strongly opposes Proposition 8, a November ballot measure that seeks to take away the LGBT community's rights to protect their families and children. Prop 8 would harm families by taking away same-sex marriage rights, and we urge our Desi community and all other right-minded Californians to Vote NO on Prop 8 on November 4th.
Same sex marriage is already recognized in California and hundreds of loving couples have already celebrated their commitment by marrying. Same-sex marriage in no way takes away any rights of, or harms the values of, our Desi community. We, all of us, want to raise our children in a way that protects their rights, and our rights as their parents. We still don't and will never have to recognize same-sex marriages in our mosques, temples, Gurudwaras, or churches. Same-sex marriage legalization has not and will never threaten our rights to live by our own religion, our own values, and our own culture. Instead it has only made it easier for committed families to protect their partners and children. Proposition 8 will take away these basic rights from several Desi families.
We Desis are very familiar with the harm marriage bans impose on our families and children. For much of California's history, our community was banned from equal marriage rights because of the color of our skin. These bans left our community economically, socially and politically isolated, and helped no one. We must never forget that history.
Never before in California's proud history has the constitution been amended to take away civil liberties already granted to its people. Prop 8 seeks to be the first to do so. We Desis have the power to stop it. We urge our Desi community to Vote NO on Prop 8 on Election Day, November 4, 2008.
